Sea kayak re-entry and cold water safety
A sea kayak re-entry is a set of techniques, not one move. The double pontoon, the paddle float, the assisted T rescue, the solo re-entry and the roll each work only inside a range of conditions, and the paddler picks the one the water allows. Hull material, skeg or rudder, and a plan built around wind, current and cold water decide which of them stays available when the day turns.
What does a Swedish paddling magazine say about sea kayak re-entry?
Paddelbladet, a Swedish magazine on sea kayaking and sea safety, treats re-entry as a ladder of options. At the bottom sits the double pontoon: two floats or two paddle floats on the shaft, the kayak stable enough to climb across. Above it sits the paddle float, one float on one blade, the other end braced on the deck, used for a solo re-entry when no partner is close. Above that sits the assisted T rescue between two paddlers, and at the top the roll, which needs no gear at all but needs a reliable eskimo roll and cold water that has not taken the breath away. Which re-entry fits which conditions?
The double pontoon suits flat water, a loaded boat and a tired paddler. Two floats, one on each side of the shaft, give a wide platform; the kayak stops rolling and the paddler can come over the deck at their own pace. It is slow and it needs gear that was stowed where it can be reached.
The paddle float suits a solo paddler in moderate chop. One float goes on one blade, the other blade is braced against the deck or a strap, and the shaft becomes an outrigger. The kayak is stable on one side only, so the paddler keeps weight low and works from the cockpit, not from the deck.
The assisted T rescue suits two paddlers who can stay in contact. The rescuer lines up perpendicular to the swamped kayak, lifts the bow across their own deck, and the hull drains as it comes up. The T shape is the whole method: bow over deck, hull across, cockpit emptied, then the swimmer re-enters with the rescuer bracing the far side. It fails in big beam seas where the two boats cannot be held together, and it fails when the rescuer has no bulkhead or float bag to keep their own stern up.
The roll suits a paddler who has practised it in cold water, with a loaded boat and in the clothing they actually wear. A roll learned in a pool, in a t-shirt, in a rented hull is a different skill from a roll in a 10 C sea with a spray deck and a loaded rear hatch. The magazine's position is that the roll is the fastest recovery and the least reliable one, because it depends on the paddler, not on the gear.
What gear decides whether a re-entry works?
A kayak that floats swamped is easier to rescue than one that sinks. Bulkheads, float bags and a sealed rear hatch keep the hull high enough for a T rescue or a paddle float entry. Without them, the rescuer is lifting a water-filled boat, and the swimmer is holding a hull that wants to go down.
Hull material changes the weight and the repair. Fiberglass and carbon are stiff and light, and they take a clean repair with cloth and resin, but they crack on a rock landing. Polyethylene is heavy and flexible, it slides over rock and it dents rather than splits, and a deep gouge is harder to fix at home. A touring paddler who lands on granite every weekend and a paddler who crosses open water once a season end up with different hulls for the same reason.
Skeg or rudder changes how the boat tracks and how it behaves in a rescue. A skeg drops from the stern and holds the kayak against wind and current without the paddler steering; a rudder steers with the feet and gives a longer lever in a following sea. A rudder is more to break and more to foul in a rescue, and a skeg leaves the deck cleaner for a paddle float and for a T rescue. Neither is a safety device by itself, but both change how much the paddler has to work to hold a heading while a partner is in the water.
Paddle, vest, spray deck and load distribution belong in the same list. A paddle with a float on one blade is a different paddle, and a vest that rides up when the paddler is in the water is a vest that has to be adjusted before the trip, not during it. A spray deck that pops on a wet exit is a deck that will not hold in a re-entry. Load distribution matters most: weight low and centered keeps the kayak stable in a rescue, and weight in the bow or on the deck makes the hull want to turn over while the paddler is climbing back in.
How is a trip planned around wind, current and cold water?
Wind, current and chop in Öresund are the magazine's standing example of a sea that looks mild from shore and is not. The sound is shallow and narrow, the current runs hard on a change of tide, and a wind against the current stands the chop up short and steep. Cold water is the other half of the plan. A paddler in cold water loses the fine control in their hands before they lose the strength in their arms, and a roll that needs a firm grip on the shaft fails first. Dress for the water, not the air, keep a dry layer in the hatch, and treat the first minutes after a capsize as the window when the simplest technique has to work.
Route planning follows the same logic. A crossing is planned with the current, not against it, and the return is planned for the hour when the wind is forecast to drop. A headland that is calm at the start of the day can be a wind tunnel by the afternoon. Where does a paddler learn these techniques?
A club, a stage or a course gives a paddler a partner, a warm pool and a coach who can watch the T rescue from the side. A paddler who learns alone can still practise the double pontoon and the paddle float in sheltered water, and can build the roll in a pool before testing it in the sea.

Stay with the boat. A kayak that floats is a platform, a shelter and a target for a rescuer, and a paddler who leaves it is a head in the water. Keep the gear on the body, keep the paddle in hand and keep the group together. The technique changes with the conditions, but the sequence does not: capsize, hold the boat, choose the recovery the water allows, and get back in before the cold decides the day.
